Market dining: In-store burgers and more
Grocery stores used to be places you went to get … groceries. Upscale markets such as Gelson’s and Whole Foods now offer in-house, sit-down venues with engaging menus, thoughtfully curated beer and wine lists and often amazing value.
Shareables at Gelson’s Wine and Craft Beer Bar at Oak Creek Shopping Center include lobster sliders for $13. Star of the show: Gelson’s BBQ Bacon Cheeseburger, a generous half pound of Angus beef plus grilled onions, peppered bacon, Swiss cheese and Elysian Space Dust IPA barbecue sauce on a brioche bun plus sidewinder fries for $17. Fine wines by the glass start at $8, $2 off on Monday and Wednesday. There’s no corkage for bottles bought onsite Friday and Saturday; tap beers are $7. A sushi bar is steps away.
Bicycles hang from the ceiling and gigantic spokes are backdrops for booths at IRV Bar, inside Whole Foods Market at Los Olivos Marketplace. The Market Pub Burger has two grass-fed beef patties, American cheese and fixings on toasted brioche plus salad or fries for $14; get that burger and a beer for $14 on Thursdays. Mary’s wings, $8, are a popular starter; there’s sushi, too. Wines by the glass start at $6, intriguing beers at $7 and pre-mixed cocktails are $8.
