New Asian eats: terrific tofu, rad ramen, kicky kapow

A trio of new eateries – Korean, Japanese and Thai, respectively – boosts Irvine’s already considerable East and Southeast Asian offerings.

The Chicago Tribune praised its generous portions and ideal crispiness, and the New York Times liked its chile-sparked style. Now So Gong Dong Tofu, aka SGD, debuts in a modest but winning space at Los Olivos Marketplace. Soondubu jjigae brings Korean silky tofu in a savory stew with half a dozen sides. Choose your starring ingredient, spice level and noodle style or hot-stone-bowl rice. Also popular: barbecue-style beef short ribs.

“Good ramen. Good day.” That’s the motto at Silverlake Ramen – which means that every day is a great day. New at Crossroads, and a go-to at Irvine Spectrum Center, Silverlake mixes street-inspired decor with rave-worthy flavors. Ramen options are as diverse as garlic and truffle and Shoyu on Fire. All come with a choice of pork, chicken or tofu. Start with handmade gyoza, fried or grilled. Try the churros for dessert.

Siam Station offers Thai street dishes with a difference, plus a winning elephant logo, in a clean-lined, contemporary space at Cypress Village. Consider the crispy fermented E-San sausage appetizer, presented with a cabbage wedge, peanuts and chile pepper; Pad Thai Super Crab with jumbo blue crab lumps; kapow stir-fry with holy basil and choice of protein; or roast duck curry, described as “sweet, salty, spicy and savory.”
