Go green: Hike open-space trails and savor a juice

One-third of the city of Irvine is dedicated to forever-protected open space, with access along the Jeffrey Open Space Trail and Quail Hill Trailhead. Now is a great time of year to catch the native foliage as the green season fades; start or finish with green drinks to match.

Jeffrey Open Space Trail along Jeffrey Road spans the I-5 freeway to the foothills, from Roosevelt to Portola Parkway. It is as beautiful an urban trail as can be imagined – impeccably landscaped, traversing thoroughfares via tunnels and bridges, with paved and unpaved options, seating areas and markers tracing local history starting with the mythical island of California. Round-trip is about 5 miles, but multiple access points make it as short or long as you like.

Several outings begin at Quail Hill Trailhead, off Shady Canyon Drive near the I-405 freeway. The Quail Hill Loop is equally ideal for children and joggers, a 1.8-mile outing highlighting native grasslands plus city views at Vista Point. The scenic 2.8-mile Shady Canyon Bikeway and Trail skirts a golf course; the demanding 7.8-mile Quail Trail offers coastal views atop Serrano Ridge.

Keep the green theme going with a drink from a nearby spot.

Nékter Juice Bar locations at Woodbury Town Center and Quail Hill Shopping Center are near the Jeffrey Open Space and Quail Hill trails, respectively. The Greenie includes spinach, parsley, celery, kale and cucumber. The Green Apple Detox features cucumber, kale and ginger. The Remedy has prebiotic greens; the Full Reset is a celery detox.

Red Straw Premium Tea Bar, at Cypress Village Shopping Center, offers green drinks, including the Toxic Garden with celery, kale, cucumber and jade tea; the Grasshopper with green tea, jasmine flower and cucumber; and the Green Mojito with jasmine green tea, mint and key lime. Note: Red Straw opens at 11:30 a.m.
